The National Provider Identifier (NPI), a ten-digit identifying number that is assigned to healthcare professionals in the United States and is specific to each person. These numbers are given out in order to facilitate identification for healthcare professionals working in the sector nationwide.
There are two main sorts of identification numbers that may be given, depending on the entity requesting the NPI. Healthcare professionals who practice alone, such as doctors, dentists, physical therapists, etc., are often given Type I NPIs. Healthcare organizations are given the second category of NPIs.
The National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES), which assigns NPIs, is actually responsible for creating the NPIs along with the Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The CMS then publishes the information about the provider's name, speciality (taxonomy), and practice address that is publicly relevant once the healthcare provider applies for an NPI through NPPES.
